Good Schedule, or not?

I like the way the Guthrie football schedule has set up this year by playing two very good teams in El Reno and McGuinness in the non-district portion of the schedule. Of course, no one knows how good teams are going to be in 2-3 years when these games are announced, but I think it works out this year.

Sure you could schedule two other teams like Piedmont and be 4-0 right now, but you may have a false sense for the Carl Albert's and Shawnee's and of course the better teams come play-off time.

By playing El Reno and McGuinness, the Jays knew ahead of time what they must improve to be where they want to be come district play.

It will be interesting to find out if Shawnee is an elite 5A team. Yes, they are 4-0, but their opponents are a combine 6-10 this season and none of them has a winning record.

With that said, I believe Shawnee is a team to be dealt with this year in the play-offs and will have a great chance to win the 5A-2 title since 2005. Many are saying the winner of this Friday's game between CA and Shawnee will win the district crown. They will defintely have the inside edge of earning two possible home play-off games.

Guthrie knows what they had to work on after the first two weeks against quality opponents. Shawnee may not find out until the mid way point of the regular season.

Ardmore's opponents non-district record is a combine 11-1 this season. I imagine they know what they had going into district play.

Next year the Jays take on Enid, Ponca City, and Duncan in the non-district. Safe to say we will know what type of team Guthrie will have going into district play.
