Where is Cox?

Curious as to why Cox did not pick up the Guthrie/Carl Albert game this year? It seems to have been a staple to make the cut.

Obviously. its not because of the rivalry, or stadium. KSBI, however, is happy about it.

KSBI had a few options to go with assuming Cox was going to pick up the Jays and Titans, but when they found out Cox was not carrying the game they quickly dumped the other suggested games and picked it up the the Jays/Titans along with the Ardmore game.

Lady Jays headed to El Reno

The Guthrie Lady Jays softball team will travel to El Reno for regional play next week along with Deer Creek and Southeast.

El Reno is the host and favorite despite losing twice to Deer Creek this season.

El Reno is ranked 7th, Deer Creek 15th, and Guthrie 20th according to the latest coaches poll.

Jays win Bison Invitational

The Guthrie BlueJay Cross Country team continues to show some dominance in the 2009 season by competeing in five team races and winning all five, including this past weekend in Shawnee at the Bison Invitational.

The Ogan brothers, Jason, Jared, and Jon, are a big part of that along with Zac Cates, Colin Betchan, and Hunter Sallee.

Guthrie will attempt to win their six state title later this year in Edmond. 1994 was the last season Guthrie captured the title and was lead by Justin Bumgardner that season.

Unfortunately, and very surprising, the Lady Jays have just one runner this season and luckily enough Rachel Roberts is a top runner in the state. She may not win a team title this year, but has a shot at making All-State.

Guthrie - Ardmore Series

2008 Guthrie 34-0 in Ardmore
2007 Guthrie 61-0 in Guthrie (play-offs)
2003 Ardmore 20-0 in Ardmore (play-offs)
2002 Guthrie 29-12 in Guthrie (play-offs)

New 5A Rankings!

Sorry, not a fan of the private schools as many know, but having said that Tulsa Kelley should be the No. 1 team in Class 5A.

The Comets not only took down the top ranked and mighty Hornets of Booker T. Not only winning, but somewhat dominating as they lead 21-0 at the half.

The new No. 1 Carl Albert lost to Booker T. on their home turf back in Week 1. Shawnee is a good team, but many would be 4-0 with their schedule to start the year.

Booker T. I believe is still the team with the greatest chance to win the 5A Gold Ball.

El Reno may have a small argument for the top ranking, but they do not have a quality win like Kelley does. The Guthrie win is impressive inside Jelsma, but not to the level of the Kelley win.

Kelley has played 6A Memorial and 4A Catoosa, who are not very good, but still blew each of those teams out and scoring 50 points in the process and in Week 2 defeated McGuinness, 10-9, for a very good quality win.

No brainer to me 4 weeks into the season:

1. T. Kelley (4-0)
2. Booker T. (2-2)
3. Carl Albert (3-1)
4. El Reno (4-0)
5. Shawnee (4-0)

3-4 wins...now that is funny!

After starting out 0-2 and Bluejay fans "overreacting" the GSP Poll Question for September 14th was now with two games in the books how many wins do you think the Jays will have this season?

Surpring me, many picked the option of 3-4. In fact, that was the most popular answer given and last check 142 people had voted. Really? That may have been an over reaction (you think).

Anybody second guessing quarterback now? Wow, these Guthrie coaches really did not get stupid over the past few football seasons. Go Figure!

Thanks Chuck

Chuck Chaney, the new GSP writer, could not make the trip to Durant for the coverage (like many Jays fans), but did a stand out job on moderating the chat forum on GSP Radio.

We continue to improve the site and with the addition of Chuck, a 2003 Guthrie alum, there will be some exciting things to come.

GSP has been received well by fans, but other media outlets really like it and that is a compliment as well.

Good time in Durant

Got to go down early Friday morning and hang out with my brother and sister-in-law before the Jays game with the Lions. Thanks for lunch bro.

I really like towns like Durant that do things right when it comes to hosting events. Thanks to KLBC FM, in Durant, for helping us find the phone number for our broadcast line and Jim Reagan for joining us earlier in the week on the HS Huddle.

Also, nice job to my bro (Ronnie Phillips) for doing the side line reporting. He did not miss a beat from his earlier radio days. We even got a Rafe interview walking into the locker room.

Is 2:42 good timing from Guthrie to Durant? Home at 1:45 and bed at 3:25 after GSP publishing.

Big games in the next 3 weeks

The next three weeks is HUGE for the Guthrie BlueJay football team.

First up is Piedmont....Huge in the fact that the Jays need to gain some confidence going into district play offensively, and for the team. The defense is still one of the best ones out there especially against the run.

Durant and Ardmore are district games that are winnable and will go a long ways in making the play-offs this season. A split with Ardmore and Durant would lead into possibly needing some help down the road outside of Guthrie to make the play-offs.

Yeah, I picked 8-2 before the year and felt more like a 7-3 season, but still believe this team can win at least 6 games in the regular season and then take your chances in the play-offs.

Guthrie - El Reno Series

The Guthrie/El Reno series in the past 9 seasons:

2008 Guthrie 35-0
2007 Guthrie 51-7
2006 Guthrie 42-0
2005 Guthrie 28-23
2004 Guthrie 21-14
2003 Guthrie 47-0
2002 Guthrie 35-13
2001 Guthrie 6-3
2000 El Reno ?

Home Sweet Home

El Reno will try and attempt to do something that has not been done at Jelsma Stadium since Octber 27th, 2006.

That night Carl Albert, in front of the television camera's, defeated the BlueJays 26-21 and since that night the Jays have been 16-0 at the Rock!

Quite impressive and there has been some folks in El Reno land that have been watching GSP closely this week and are wanting to see that streak end.

El Reno has lots to play for, but Guthrie may have a lot more to play for this week.

Tough Week for 5A-2

In Class 5A football talk, 5A-2 is often brought up as one of the toughest districts in the entire state and rightfully so, but Week 1 was not a reflection of that.

The district was a combined 2-6 in the first week of play and the two wins were against Chickasha and McLoud, who combined a season ago went 8-13.

Guthrie - McGuinness (12-7)
*McGuinness is a good team and will win some games this season, but Guthrie is the better team.

Carl Albert - Booker T. (27-6)
* No surprise the result and we really can not take much from this except that Booker T. is the elite of the elite in 5A. Carl Albert will not go away and will be there in the end. Nothing new for them to lose in the non-district.

Ardmore - Ada (21-18)
* Tremendous game in a rivalry game that many do not know about.

Durant - McAlester (35-0)
* Surely Vype Magazine did not have the Lions as their second team in 5A-2? Misprint, right?

Noble - Tecumseh (21-20)
* Tecumseh won three games last year.

Capitol Hill - Douglass (54-0)
* Glorified scrimmage for Douglass

Shawnee - Chickasha (38-24)
* The Wolves seemed to have more trouble then expected, but hey its a win and many would take it right now.

Harrah - McLoud (19-7)
* The Panthers getting the wins as much as possible before district play hits.

Cross Country rolling early

The Guthrie BlueJay Cross Country team is on a roll after winning their first two meets of the 2009 season.

Jason Ogan won the Guthrie run (second year in a row) and finished second in the Weatherford run.

The Jays will compete for the 5A title after finishing third last year. The race will be in Edmond once again this season.

More surprising to me this season is that there is just one female runner for GHS. Sure, she is one of the tops in the state (Rachel Roberts), but one runner at a program like Guthrie?

Not like Gary Boxley and Clay Tarter did not go searching for female runners up and down the hallways. Just hope this is not a trend for next season.

Irish stun Jays in Week 1

I knew the Jays offense was inexperience, but thought would still be able to find the end zone at least twice against McGuinness as the Irish shocked the Jays 12-7 in OKC. Earlier in the week, I had predicted 2-3 scores by the Jays, but thought maybe one of those scores would be by the defense or special teams.

Tough lessons are hopefully learned in the loss, but in high school football weeks 1-3 are learning tools and preparation for district play.

For more of my thoughts on the Jays/Irish contest please read my column on GSP.

You can put it on the board?

Just put up the new poll question of the week on Guthrie Sports Page and asking how many points do you think the Jays will put on the board come Friday night against the Irish.

I went with the 18-24 category thinking the Jays can find the end zone perhaps three times which would match what they did a season ago (21-3).

Being around the coaches I find myself thinking like them at times with field position, defense, and special teams. All three of those area's will need to help this BlueJay offense build confidence and an identity.

Irish Running back Larone Richardson is capable of making a big run if he can get past the front seven of the Jays.
